This Week in Comics: 08/09/2010

Just do yourself a favor and listen to Beach House, okay?

And welcome to This Week in Comics, where every day is a comic book and few of them sound like the Beach House album Teen Dream.

MONDAY

First Issues

Ultimate Comics Avengers 3 #1 (Of 6)

(Mark Millar/Steve Dillon)

Marvel Comics

In which the Ultimate Avengers fight vampires, which the X-Men are also doing somewhere in the comic books. On the other hand, we have a Mark Millar comic that comes out on time and is drawn by Steve Dillon, who helped birth Preacher and the good bits of Garth Ennis’ Punisher run. I guess you gotta take the good with the bad.

TUESDAY

New Manga Day

Dorohedoro Volume 2

(Q Hayashida)

VIZ Media

Dorohedoro, for those of you in need of reminding, is about a guy with a lizard head who eats the heads of wizards to undo the spell cast on him. Also, this volume has a zombie killing contest. Shit is crazy, y’all.

WEDNESDAY

Mainstream Superhero Stuff

Green Lantern Emerald Warriors #1

(Peter Tomasi/Fernando Pasarin)

DC Comics

To prepare for the Green Lantern movie, DC Comics will produce as many Green Lantern comics as it takes to saturate the market. This one’s about Guy Gardner, who’s always fun to read so long as he keeps his dickish personality. Pray the movie’s good and the gamble pays off or DC is going to stand for Defunct Comics. And I don’t want that.

THURSDAY

Not Quite Friday, but Still Exciting

Godland Celestial Edition Volume 2 HC, $34.99

(Joe Casey/Tom Scioli)

Image Comics

I really want to get into Godland, as it seems the kind of Jack Kirby pastiche that earns the right to be compared to Kirby. I mean, look at that cover. The Celestial Edition is a huge hardcover collecting 12 issues of the series (#13-24). Plus, the book is going to end soon, so soon we can expect one or two more Celestial Edition to finish off the series.

FRIDAY

TGIN(ick Spencer)

Morning Glories #1

(Nick Spencer/Joe Eisma)

Image Comics

Nick Spencer: that kid is blowing up. He came out with Existence 2.0 and 3.0, and then his Forgetless rocked my little world. Now he’s got Morning Glories coming out in addition to writing Jimmy Olsen stories for Action Comics. Most exciting for a guy I haven’t heard of until a few months ago.

What’s it about? A prep school or something. Who cares? It’ll be awesome.

SATURDAY

Essential Reading

Chew: The Omnivore Edition Volume 1

(John Layman/Rob Guillory)

Image Comics

You know what else pleases me? How popular Chew is. For those of you who don’t know, Chew is a weirdo crime comic about eating people to gain their memories and solve crimes. And this hardcover edition collects 10 issues of this stuff. Wonderful.

SUNDAY

Last Issues

Buzzard #3 (of 3)

(Eric Powell/Kyle Holtz/Dave Stewart)

Dark Horse Comics

“From the page of The Goon!” I really gotta start reading The Goon.
