This Week in Comics: 08/16/10

You know what? Contra is still a great record.

Welcome to this Week in Comics, where every day is a comic.

MONDAY

First Issues

Ides Of Blood #1 (of 6)

(Stuart C. Paul/Christian Duce)

Wildstorm/DC Comics

You know, complaining about vampires is too easy, and we’ve heard it all before. I’ve got a bit of cautious optimism for this one. If you can do a new twist on vampires (I guess by putting them in a new context, in this case Ancient Rome) and it’s actually pretty decent, then I’m all for it. After all, mainstream comics are based on variations of Superman.

It’s just disheartening that there’s some alternate universe where you can effectively pitch a comic book about Rome that doesn’t require a genre twist to convince a publisher that it will sell.

TUESDAY

No New Manga Today, So Read This

Uncanny X-Men #527

(Matt Fraction/Whilce Portacio)

Marvel Comics

X-Men! It’s like a manga! Drama! Angst! Lots of characters and relationships to keep track of! But with people shooting lasers from their hands! Strangely Freudian!

WEDNESDAY

Mainstream Superhero Stuff

Shadowland: Daughters of the Shadow #1 (of 3)/Shadowland: Power Man #1 (of 4)

(Jason Henderson/Ivan Rodriguez)/Fred Van Lente/Mahmud Asrar/Scott Hanna)

Marvel Comics

…and so the myriad tie-in miniseries begin.

THURSDAY

Not Quite Friday, but Still Exciting

All Those Avengers-type books coming out this week

(Bendis, Brubaker, Parker, Gage, Immonen, McKone, Djurdjevic, Deodato, Walker, etc)

Marvel Comics

Just when I think I’m out, they pull me back in.

Secret Avengers: this seems like it comes out a lot!

New Avengers: Bendis! Magic!

Thunderbolts: Man-Thing!

Avengers Academy: Sexy Teenvengers!

FRIDAY

TGIB(adass! Violence! Crime! Etc!)

Sweets #2 (of 5)

(Kody Chamberlain)

Image Comics

I dug the first issue of Sweets , but it was just getting started. I’m excited to see the book in full swing.

SATURDAY

Essential Reading

Showcase Presents: The Doom Patrol Volume 2 TP

(Arnold Drake/Bruno Premiani)

DC Comics

Look at that cover and tell me you don’t want to read every page of that.

SUNDAY

Last Issues

Air #24

(G. Willow Wilson/M.K. Perker)

Vertigo/DC Comics

Still a bit miffed that this had to go. But it lasted a couple of years, which is more than I can say for other Vertigo books I dug like The Minx and Greek Street. Y’all need to read more Vertigo books so I can be less depressed all the time when they’re inevitably canceled. Seriously.
