Nothing says fun like the musty smell of your favorite comic book! Mmmmmmmm...musty. Plus...what can you say about the incredible illustrations that come from Japan? OH YA!! You know what I'm talking about...Huh, Huh! No worries comic fans, we've gotcha covered! Everything Comic, Animation, Adaptation and Merchandising related will be found right here...all with the same felling just like when you watched your very first TRUE Japanese, un-rated Anime...all by yourself...cozy.
This Week in Comics: 05/24/10
You know who’s pretty good? That, rapper Drake. You ever hear his mix-tape “So Far Gone”? It’s pretty good. If you Google it or something you can download it for free. It’s a mix-tape, so it’s perfectly legal. I don’t think his studio album will be very good, but at least we’ll have the mix-tapes.
So welcome to This Week in Comics, which is at least as good as a mediocre studio record.
MONDAY
First Issues
Boondock Saints: In Nomine Patris #1
(Troy Duffy/J.B. Love/Guus Floor)
12 Gauge Comics
Ignoring the fact that The Boondock Saints franchise is awful Tarantino wannabe bullsh!t, I can’t fathom a comic book publisher willing to deal with writer/director Troy Duffy, who is a major-league a$$hole. At least he’s got a co-writer scripting the thing, which means that this comic book version will be a touch better than Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, which was so up its own a$$ with series mythology that it forgot that it needed to be an entertaining movie.
Do yourself a favor and watch the documentary “Overnight”, which chronicles Troy Duffy being a bad human being, and marvel at the luckiest guy on earth blowing his chance by being himself.
TUESDAY
New Manga Day
20th Century Boys Vol. 8
(Naoki Urasawa)
Viz Media
Internet, I’m really behind on 20th Century Boys. How behind, you ask? Um, I haven’t read past the first volume. But I really, really want to, because Naoki Urasawa is awesome. Have you read Pluto? I haven’t read much of it, but I liked it.
I really gotta catch up on things.
WEDNESDAY
Mainstream Superhero Stuff
Secret Avengers #1
(Ed Brubaker/Mike Deodato)
Marvel Comics
Secret Avengers #1 is the most intriguing of the Heroic Age Avengers titles, being the one NOT written by Brian Michael Bendis. That it’s written by Ed Brubaker makes it more intriguing, because he’s not exactly a team superhero book guy. In fact, the last time he did a team book it was a yearlong arc in Uncanny X-Men that found him surprisingly out of his element. Though he’s still a crime guy, he’ll probably fare better in the principal Marvel Universe, considering his Captain America track record.
THURSDAY
Not Quite Friday, but Still Exciting
X-Men: Second Coming Revelations: Blind Science #1
(Simon Spurrier/Gerald Parel/Paul Davidson)
Marvel Comics
My favorite new characters of recent years? The X-Club from Uncanny X-Men, which seemed like a no-brainer for this franchise — a group of characters devoted to doing scientific stuff while the regular X-People are out having crossovers and dying in dramatic fashions. One of my favorite Uncanny X-Men issues in recent years? The one where the X-Club travels back in time to early 20th century San Francisco. So a comic book where the X-Club does stuff is right up my alley.
FRIDAY
TGIB(atman)
Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne #2
(Grant Morrison/Frazier Irving)
DC Comics
If you’ve been reading this column (and are probably a friend of mine), then you know that I’m all about Grant Morrison. I read Return of Bruce Wayne #1 and thought it was the start of what’s obviously going to prove a brilliant deconstruction (both literal and otherwise) of Batman, revealing the paradoxical elements that go into Batman. The caveman issue gave us the primal roots of the character, and now #2 will give us the demonic, supernatural bits.
Also, it’s drawn by Frazier Irving. Yay.
SATURDAY
Essential Reading
Air Volume 3: Pureland
(G. Willow Wilson/M.K. Perker)
Vertigo/DC Comics
In honor of Air being canceled this week (I’ll scold you people later), I’m featuring the Volume 3 trade. Now, you may think that it’s futile to buy the trade of a book that’s ending in a couple of months, G. Willow Wilson herself said that she’ll get to finish the book, so it’s still worth reading.
Still, it makes me sad.
SUNDAY
Last Issues
Superman: War Of The Supermen #4 (Of 4)
(Sterling Gates/James Robinson/Eddy Barrows/J.P. Mayer)
DC Comics
For those of you unfamiliar with this particular title, it’s the one where Supermen go to war with one another once a week for a month, which is important for some reason. One assumes that, now that it’s over, the next event will be something like “Peace of the Supermen.” Who else can hardly contain themselves over this gripping event?
