This Week in Comics: 06/21/10
With all their production values, multiple songwriters, and other studio/record label f*&kery, we don’t pay much attention to the pop album. Thank god for Lady Gaga, right? Shut up, The Fame Monster is amazing. At only eight tracks, the record doesn’t overstay its welcome nor does it feel padded with requisite show-offy ballads and other assorted filler. Even the song that does approach ballad territory sounds a bit like Queen, so it’s okay. In fact, it’s mostly heavy dance tracks, which is what you really want from a pop album, right? Well, that’s what I want, at least.
Oh, yeah. Welcome to this week in comics, where nothing gender-bends as much as Lady Gaga.
MONDAY
First Issues
Bullet To The Head #1
(Matz/Colin Wilson)
Dynamite Entertainment
At first I wanted to feature this title because it reminded me of a John Woo film I haven’t seen yet. But then I realized that it’s drawn by Colin Wilson, who did that pretty good, gritty work on Wildstorm’s Point Blank miniseries with Ed Brubaker. Thankfully, this is also a crime book. Hope it’s good.
TUESDAY
F*&k manga, here’s a comic about dinosaurs.
Jurassic Park: Redemption #1
(Bob Schreck/Nate Van Dyke)
IDW Publishing
It doesn’t matter that this is a licensed comic. It has dinosaurs in it, and is therefore more interesting than most comics. Also it has a Frank Miller cover and that is awesome. As for what the book’s about, they re-open Jurassic Park and misfortune ensues. We wouldn’t have it any other way, right?
WEDNESDAY
Mainstream Superhero Stuff
Green Arrow #1
(J.T. Krul/Diogene Neves)
DC Comics
For those of you who like terrible comics, this must be an exciting prospect: J.T. Krul, he of The Rise of Arsenal fame, writing another gritty superhero comic about a Green Arrow character. This time, it’s Green Arrow. Will this be as gloriously trashy as The Rise of Arsenal? I don’t know, because I refuse to pay for this garbage.
THURSDAY
Not Quite Friday, but Still Exciting
Batman The Return Of Bruce Wayne #3 (of 6)
(Grant Morrison/Yanick Paquette)
DC Comics
Yes. I love this series. Each issue has Morrison showing off a different component of Batman (Issue 1: violence, good versus evil, totems; Issue 2: superstition, detective work), which is great, but #2 really won me over as it revealed just why Superman and company need to stop Batman’s return to the present. I love it. I love it, I love it, I love it.
FRIDAY
TGIA(vengers)
Avengers #2
(Brian Michael Bendis/John Romita Jr.)
Marvel Comics
For the past year I keep thinking “Why do I keep reading Bendis Avengers books? Surely I can spend my time reading something more worthwhile?” I’d like to personally apologize to Bendis for taking him for granted. You guys, Avengers #1 blew me away. Brian Michael Bendis wrote a surprisingly old school Avengers story (complete with Kang!) without sacrificing any of his style. Amazing. I love this, too.
SATURDAY
Ach, reopened wounds!
S.W.O.R.D.: No Time To Breathe
(Kieron Gillen/Steven Saunders)
Marvel Comics
I’m STILL miffed S.W.O.R.D. was canceled, and I blame most of you for not reading it. Kieron Gillen needs a full-time gig, and he was being put to good use on this Astonishing X-Men spin-off. At least Gillen managed to get one complete (and pretty good) story off before cancellation.
SUNDAY
Last Issues
Sam & Twitch: The Writer #4 (of 4)
(Luca Blegino/Luca Erbetta/Fabio Bono)
Image Comics
I don’t know anything about this series except that it’s about Sam and Twitch, the cops from Spawn, who I always thought were pretty neat looking. I can imagine this book being a cross between Hellblazer and Fell, which I’m sure the book is probably nothing like. I also imagine Ben Templesmith drawing it, which is also not true. So, I think I’ll skip this book to keep hope alive.
