Barrel of News: Capcom @ Comic-Con
Greetings tossers! It’s that wonderful time of year again! Christmas? Not quite. But it is a Christmas/Thanksgiving/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa/Halloween like event for nerds and geeks everywhere. Comic-Con is at our doorstep and it’s almost time to peek inside.
Today, I want to talk about Capcom at Comic-Con. Yes, that powerhouse of beat-em up fighting games. After their recent success with Super Street Fighter IV and Lost Planet 2, Capcom is ready to rock Comic-Con with some grade A titles.
Dead Rising 2
One of the major heavy hitters to get some face time is the zombie-tastic Dead Rising 2. You all might remember that game about a photojournalist, Frank West, trapped in a mall. Oh, and the mall is filled with crazed zombies that are bent on making you join their ranks. Well, Dead Rising 2 takes place 5 years after that horrible incident, and the new main man is former BMX champion Chuck Greene. It all takes place in Fortune City (Looks something like Las Vegas…) Chuck will have to battle it out in the reality show “Terror is Reality” to earn money for Zombrex for his daughter. (A med that keeps the zombification away when infected!)
That’s the basic plot, save your daughter while trying not to get munched. For those of you who completely ignored the main story in the first Dead Rising, there’s still plenty of zombie-slaying to be had! Chuck is a master of cobbling random objects together to form deadlier versions. So, expect plenty of blood and gore when you combine a paddle with two chainsaws. You can make a wide variety of weapons and doo-dads to combat the undead menace. My personal favorite is something called “Freedom Bear.”
The game also features a rocking co-op mode and competitive multiplayer. The first game you were all by your lonesome, this time around you get up to four different Chucks helping or fighting you. (Yep, everybody is the same character… Maybe Capcom is a fan of Multiple Man?) There will be several upon several different game modes that will have you and your friends busy with the undead hordes for hours upon hours.
Marvel Vs. Capcom 3
The best fighting game in the past ten years is finally getting its sequel. Yes, the BEST fighting game ever. Primal Rage!… I wish… It’s actually Marvel Vs. Capcom! And the third in the series is finally seeing the light of day! I know I already did a spiel on this game, but it’s worth mentioning again!
A few new faces have been confirmed in recent news. New additions to the roster are Dante from Devil May Cry 3, and Deadpool from Marvel comics. (The merc with a mouth!) A big bad villian also shows his fiery face in a fairly new trailer. This scary dude would be the Dread Dormammu. (An old school Dr. Strange baddie.) Nobody knows if he’s playable or a boss. The rest of the roster should be getting a hefty reveal once Comic-Con hits.
If you like crazy mad-cap fights and you find yourself at Comic-Con, be sure to check out the Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 tournament. They will have a giant fighting ring with people going head to head over prizes and bragging rights. If you’re unfortunately not there, we will be sure to let you know how it all goes down.
Mystery Game
Recently, Yoshinori Ono at the EVO tournaments teased that a major release was going to be announced at Comic-Con. (This is the guy who was the producer behind Super Street Fighter 4!) He has also recently been poking hints at how much he wants a sequel to Darkstalkers, even going so far as spreading rumors about it online.
A lot of you might think its a no-brainer. That we will finally be gifted with a brand spanking new Darkstalkers after all these years. But the Executive Producer of Dead Rising 2, Keiji Inafune, has also leaked that he will be a part of a new game announcement as well. (This is also the creator of Mega-Man btw. So, he’s VERY important.) It could be two completely different games, or just one super-huge one! It’s anyone’s guess. I hope its the idea I sent in a while back. Come on Capcom Bikini Beach Volleyball!
It sounds like Capcom has a lot on its plate this year. All good news for us gamers, eh? This is only a small sliver of awesome news that gets released at Comic-Con. Expect more tidbits and hype until it finally hits later this month. Be sure to check back as Monkey Toss TV gears up to take it DOWN! Until then Tossers, stay frosty…
