This Week in Comics: 08/23/10
What a dismal week. Apologies if this week’s installment seems more half-assed than usual.
Welcome to This Week in Comics, where every day is a comic book.
MONDAY
First Issues
Guarding The Globe #1 (Of 6)
(Robert Kirkman/Ryan Ottley)
Image Comics
Superhero team book from the pages of Invincible or something. I haven’t read Invincible even though people tell me it’s awesome. I just got around to catching up on The Walking Dead, so one thing at a time here, guys.
TUESDAY
This Seems Familiar
Ani-Max
(Ron Marz/Jeevan J. Kang)
Dynamite Entertainment
Brown-haired, anime-styled white boy has the remarkable ability to turn into different animals. I have a feeling the guys who make Ben 10 are going to sue over this.
WEDNESDAY
Mainstream Superhero Stuff
X-Men: Curse Of The Mutants: Storm & Gambit #1
(Chuck Kim/Mico Suayan/Chris Bachalo)
Marvel Comics
I seriously don’t think “X-Men fight Vampires” can sustain more than one book at a time.
THURSDAY
Not Quite Friday, but Still Exciting
Punisher Max: Happy Ending #1
(Peter Milligan/Juan Jose Ryp)
Marvel Comics
I really hope this is good because it makes me sad when I see Peter Milligan’s name on piffle when he’s the guy who brought us X-Statix and Shade the Changing Man. If it turns out to be rubbish, I won’t be surprised. What does surprise me, though, is seeing Juan Jose Ryp drawing a Marvel book. I thought he was handcuffed in Avatar Press’ basement.
FRIDAY
TGIT(he Guys that Made This)
Action Comics #892
(Paul Cornell/Jeff Lemire/Pete Woods/Pier Gallo)
DC Comics
Paul Cornell’s Action Comics run has been really fun so far (granted it’s only been two issues but still) and Jeff Lemire’s a wonderful man, at least outside the DCU. His Atom one-shot did nothing to impress, but his Atom co-feature in Adventure Comics was pretty good. This time he’s doing a Superboy back-up story.
SATURDAY
Essential Reading
Fantastic Four #582
(Jonathan Hickman/Neil Edwards)
Marvel Comics
Best book Marvel’s publishing? Most underrated? How about both?
SUNDAY
Last Issues
Superman: Secret Origin #6 (of 6)
(Geoff Johns/Gary Frank /John Sibal)
DC Comics
I had no idea this was still being published.
