Viz Media Nabs SIX Eisner Nominations
Last week the Will Eisner Industry Award Nominations came out, and Viz Media scored six nominations. The awards ceremony will happen on the evening of Friday, July 23rd at Comic-Con International: San Diego.
Naoki Urasawa’s the big winner of the Eisner nomination game, with his wonderful 20th Century Boys nominated for “Best Continuing Series” and “Best U.S. Edition of International Material – Asia.” His Astro Boy remake, Pluto: Urasawa x Tezuka, is nominated for “Best Limited Series or Story Arc” and “Best U.S. Edition of International Material – Asia.” Urasawa himself was nominated for “Best Writer/Artist” for his two series against such heavyweights as Darwyn Cooke, R. Crumb, David Mazzucchelli, and Terry Moore.
Also, cooking manga Oishinbo by Tetsu Kariya and Akira Hanasaki scored a nomination for “Best U.S. Edition of International Material – Asia.”
The Eisners, for those who don’t know, are the Oscars of comicdom, except that the Eisners are less disappointing and probably a lot less rigged. This year’s nominations are a bit annoying, with some quite frankly ridiculous choices and a startling lack of female talent nominated, but there are some wise nominations besides the multiple ones for Urasawa. For example: the Invincible Iron Man covers, Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ Incognito, Cameron Stewart’s Sin Titulo, and that issue of The Unwritten that was all about Rudyard Kiping. Oh, and Scott Pilgrim vs. The Universe, of course.
G’luck, Viz.
