Darkwing Duck!
I can’t remember if I talked about this yet…it’s been a while since I’ve written anything. And I mean anything; post-it note reminders, shopping lists, etc. So writing real things is just right out the window. But due to my love for this subject (and contractual obligations) I’ve come out of writing retirement to gloat about the one, the only….
The Darkwing Duck monthly comic book!
Boom Studios is a company. A comic company; they make funny books. Most notably, they hold the rights for various Disney licenses. Boom produces new stories for classic books like Walt Disney Comics and Uncle Scrooge, which is great because Scrooge McDuck is my idol. But Boom knows what you readers want…they know that after all these years, you still long for the fun and fancy free days of the Disney Afternoon. And now, may I happily report that our prayers have been answered.
Beloved fictional cartoon superhero, Darkwing Duck has been granted a 4 issue mini-series in June. But just as issue #1 hit the stands this year, reaction was so positive that Boom decided to turn the small series into a full blown ongoing title! Now, before you start to worry that your beloved memories are being exploited for cash, I can let you know that the venture is completely worthwhile.
Lately, every single possible nostalgic thing you can think of is being brought back and revitalized or just capitalized on poorly to cash in. But that isn’t true in this case. I can tell you that this book is so great…so great that dare I say it could quite possibly be better than the original cartoon?! The art is better, the jokes are funnier-and it’s all thanks to writer Ian Brill and artist James Silvani. These guys are amazing. Reading this book is like being 8 years old again and sitting on the carpeted floor, watching TV. In fact, this book is so good, that I don’t mind the extra work it takes to read words, as opposed to watching television.
But the Disney Afternoon revival doesn’t stop here. The Uncle Scrooge book has had the “Ducktales” title added to it, and brings back great characters like Gizmoduck and Webby. Starting in November, those pint-sized detectives, the Rescue Rangers, will be given their own ongoing book as well! Wonderful. Perfect. Terrific. All we need is a Tale Spin graphic novel and my life is pretty much set.
