This Week in Comics: 09/14/2010
I feel like being pithy, so I’m going to be pithy.
Welcome to This Week in Comics, where every day is a comic book.
MONDAY
First Issues
X-23 #1
(Marjorie Liu/Will Conrad)
Company
What the world needs: More Wolverine comics. But in its defense, I’d give it a chance just because Marjorie Liu is writing it and not some random ass.
TUESDAY
New Manga Day
Hayate The Combat Butler Vol. 16 TP
(Kenjiro Hata)
VIZ Media
Yes, I chose this based on the title. It’s about a guy who ends up working as a butler for a (probably) cute girl. It’s probably a lot of fun.
If you don’t like that, there’s a new volume of Detroit Metal City out this week. Volume 6, I believe.
WEDNESDAY
Mainstream Superhero Stuff
Zatanna #5
(Paul Dini/Chad Hardin/Wayne Faucher)
DC Comics
Ugh, no more Stephanie Roux interiors? No offense, Chad Hardin and Wayne Faucher, but I’ve never heard of you guys and Stephanie Roux’s interiors were pretty good. Zatanna is a fun comic that doesn’t have any rape in it yet. I like non-rapey comics.
THURSDAY
Not Quite Friday, but Still Exciting
Joe the Barbarian #7
(Grant Morrison/Sean Murphy)
Vertigo/DC Comics
It’s been MONTHS since an issue of Joe the Barbarian has come out, so this has been long overdue.
FRIDAY
Morning Glories is Awesome
Morning Glories
(Nick Spencer/Joe Eisma)
Image Comics
The first issue of Morning Glories (which I PRAY is an ongoing) was great. Sure it was set up, but it had a killer opening scene, introduced a ton of really interesting characters and mysteries, AND THEN had a nice shocker of an ending. I can’t wait to read the rest of this series.
(Okay, this one’s not that pithy, but whatever)
SATURDAY
Essential Reading
Love And Rockets: New Stories Vol. 3
(Jaime/Gilbert Bros Hernandez)
Fantagraphics
If I have to explain to you why a new volume of Love and Rockets is essential, then you fail comics.
SUNDAY
Last Issues
Hack Slash: My First Maniac #4 (Of 4)
(Tim Seeley/Dan Leister/Mark Englert)
Image Comics
I have never read Hack/Slash before. I certainly won’t read this issue, because it is the last one and I would not appreciate it.
