San Diego Comic-Con 2010: Grant Morrison Panel

Comic-Con International: San Diego 2010

DC Focus: Grant Morrison Panel

San Diego 2010 marks the first time I’ve seen Grant Morrison in person. I’ve obsessed over his work since I was 12, tracking down nearly everything he’s ever put his hands on and consuming every interview and piece of information about the man I could find. He’s a living legend.

Impeccably dressed in a gray/silverish suit, Morrison sat with DC Comics editor Ian Sattler, and they made small talk before Sattler opened the floor for questions. This was, like, five minutes into the panel. Now, usually a panel goes on for a while before the fan Q&A comes up. So you get a solid 40 minutes of important talking before the embarrassment begins.

With the questioning came an unforeseen effect: people blocking my view of one of my favorite comic book idols. Instead of hearing Morrison’s stories and insane ideas, it was an hour of “What was it like writing Batgirl in that one panel of Final Crisis?” Thanks a lot, nerds. One of the greatest minds in comics and you’re asking him about trivia.

But I’m biased. Q&As always make me nervous. I don’t trust comic fans to be normal human beings, and thus I fear someone asking a question that’s a little too probing, insulting the creator, and generally embarrassing everyone by completely lacking social skills. Thankfully this did not happen.

That said, any bit of Morrison is worth it, even if it means sitting through an hour of fans asking the same questions over and over. This is still Grant F*@king Morrison, one of the most charming men in comics. Even two minutes of him talking between several fanboy stuttering is divine.
