IDW Announces “True Blood” Comics
On April 2, 2010, San Diego-based comic book publisher IDW Publishing announced the publication of comics based on the mega-popular HBO series True Blood.
The comic, which will be released in July, features a plot by series creator Alan Ball along with series writers Elisabeth Finch and Kate Barnow. David Tischman and Mariah Huehner will script the comic with David Messina handling the art.
Unlike, say, The Ghost Whisperer, True Blood is the kind of licensed comic that’s a no-brainer. It’s an incredibly popular genre show and genre fans are the people most likely to read comics. IDW understands this the best, which is why they publish comics based on Star Trek, Transformers, G.I. Joe, Angel, and Doctor Who, among many other things.
As for True Blood, people will talk smack because it’s a vampire show during a period when vampires are saturating the media, but it’s actually a very fun show. The first few episodes of Season 1 tried very hard to be a serious show depicting vampires as a minority in America but quickly gave into the Twilight-style Edward/Bella relationship stuff, but with waaaay more f*@king. Season 2 is where the series embraces its trashiness with slow-motion shirtless football games and crazy supernatural entities that proved the season’s main antagonist — which is a very Buffy the Vampire Slayer thing to do.
But the comic should be fun for the fans. David Messina’s a fine artist and pretty good at drawing celebrity faces. Hopefully the comic will be as deliciously smutty as the show.
