…You’re still reading, huh?

Damn it.  I thought I could get away with just writing that sentence and calling it a day.  *sigh* All right, all right, here comes a REAL review.  Sheesh…

For the last seven months, my friends and I have been glued to every single book with the “Blackest Night” banner adorning it.  I picked up every book religiously on Wednesday, searching each comic book store if it was sold out.  And every Wednesday, we’d all gather in my friend’s garage, sit at his beat up table and pass around the latest tie-ins.  And of course, we’d gab about it like pre-teen girls, discussing the latest issue of “Tiger Beat”.  And finally, it is with a bittersweet emotion that I read the final issue last Wednesday.

Geoff Johns had a lot to finish up in this single issue: the introduction of the White Lantern (spoiler alert), the resurrection of dead heroes (spoiler alert), and the destruction of Nekron (spoiler alert).  All it took was one giant sized issue to do it.  The story and action come at you rather fast, leaving almost zero time to catch your breath and figure things out.  So the book takes a bit longer to get through as you stare intently at each very, very, very, colorful panel, attempting to soak everything in.  As much as I love this book, it’s nothing new when put in comparison with other crossover events: lots of splash pages featuring dozens of heroes crammed  together, endless word bubbles filled to the brim with info, and events and resolutions that sometimes don’t make sense, but are totally rad.  That’s not to say that Blackest Night isn’t really fun, because it totally is.

Most people I talked to dismissed this mini-series as a cop-out in order to re-do all the murdering mistakes DC has made over the years with its characters.  And while there is a bit of that near the climax, it’s nothing like a free for all retcon of the last decade of events.  Instead, we get an interesting take on death and life in the DC universe which is a great lead in to this month’s “Brightest Day” aftermath.  If you haven’t heard, Brightest Day is a new mini-series that focuses on life, loss, and most of all, second chances.  And so ended the Blackest Night.  Definitely worth a look.  Check it out!

There, are you happy now?  You readers are SO demanding!
