“Stalkers” Weekly Movie News!
What up, Vanilla Face? Here’s your movie news:
Wolverine 2 is set to start filming next January in Japan and will indeed be an adaptation of Chris Claremont and Frank Miller’s 1982 story arc. In their series, Logan goes to Japan and falls in love with a beautiful heiress. But of course this woman, Mariko Yashida, is the heiress to a deadly crime family of the Yakuza clan. Tons of ninjas get stabbed and sliced but eventually Wolverine appears to overcome his feral nature. There’s no director attached to this project but X-Men and Valkyrie writer Christopher McQuarrie is working the script. Hopefully this will be better than Wolverine: Origins which amounted to a surface-level parade of useless mutant cameos.
Fast and the Furious 5 is coming and now that we’ve all collectively groaned in anguish let me give a few reasons why: $343 million. The movie will be set in Brazil, tentatively, and that’s really all we know or even care about. You can probably deduce the entire plotline just from that information.
At the risk of making news out of thin air, I’ll keep this next one really short. Mark Millar, who we all remember as the writer of the Wanted comic book series and the Kick Ass comics books, is working on his directorial debut. STV got a chance to sit down with Millar and ask him about the unnamed project. According to Millar, the movie would be set in Scotland and feature an entirely new superhero with a cast of completely unknown Scottish actors. Millar says a lot of his inspiration came from Neil Blompkamp’s District 9 and that his movie will have a really cool 21st century-feel, like Trainspotting. One of my main gripes with the superhero movie genre today, other than it completely raping the memory of all of my childhood cartoons, toys and comics, is that every huge Hollywood actor wants to jump on the band wagon. Everyone wants a piece of the action and these huge actors, very talented actors in some cases, become superheroes. But these actors bring with them the baggage of their huge fame. That’s I’m excited by the idea of Millar’s new project: a bunch of no-name actors who will be able to completely fulfill that character of the superhero without dragging their baggage into the film.
Finally, we have news about season 5 of Dexter. I saved this for last not only because it’s the best but because there are huge spoilers here.
****SPOILER ALERT****
DO NOT READ ON IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE END OF SEASON 4
Entertainment Weekly’s blog The Auiello Files interviewed Dexter executive producer Sara Colleton and she gave some amazing details about what’s going to happen to Dexter in season 5. She said that season 5 will pick up right where season 4 ended: with Rita lying in a bathtub full of her own blood. Apparently, they were thinking of starting season 5 a few years in the future but decided to show Dexter dealing with the tragedy and having to figure out how to live. Dexter will have to plan the funeral, learn how to take care of the kids and the new baby—all while dealing with the loss of Rita. Colleton also said that there may not be a “villain” in this next season. They’re going to try to delve deeper into Dexter’s psyche and do something that’s “fresh and unique”. Colleton also said that Michael C. Hall’s battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma is nearly over and that the actor is in good health.
