News

This week we were blessed with some fantastic news about the Spider-Man 4 movie: it’s not going to happen. This means we don’t have to watch Kirsten Dunst play an unsexy version of herself or see Toby MacGuire prance around with bangs while pointing at people. Sony is rebooting the franchise starting immediately because if they let the project go stagnate they lose their rights back to Disney/Marvel. No word on who will play the new Peter Parker, but Deadline Hollywood is reporting that the new director for the fledgling Spidey franchise will be (500) Days of Summer director Marc Webb. Webb has met with Sony producers and executives to get production rolling by this summer for a 2012 release.

Another exciting bit of news this week is that Lionsgate is the top bidder for rights to the Terminator franchise. The Halcyon Group is selling the rights to get itself out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The Los Angeles Times reports that Lionsgate offered $15 million cash plus %5 of gross receipts on any future movies. I don’t know how McG and Christian Bale’s contracts work, but if this sale keeps McG’s dumbass fingers and Bale’s over-acting out of the Terminator franchise then me and a million other fans will be happy. Nobody liked Terminator Salvation. It was completely average in every way. There were no surprises and it didn’t advance the plot or characters at all. We learned nothing new about John Connor or Kyle Reese. Also, Common was in it. Rappers need to stop trying to act. I’m talking to you, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges.

Very quickly here are some other things you need to know. Joe Johnston, director of Jurassic Park III and the highly anticipated Captain America origins tale The First Avenger: Captain America, has announced that there’s a new Jurassic Park trilogy in the works. In an interview with BoxOffice.com Johnston said, “…there is going to be a Jurassic Park IV. And it’s going to be unlike anything you’ve seen. It breaks away from the first three—it’s essentially the beginning of the second Jurassic Park trilogy.”

Iron Man 2 is going to be released in Digital IMAX. Jackie Earle Haley, who played Rorschach in Watchmen is rumored to be cast as the villain Sinestro in Martin Campbell’s upcoming The Green Lantern. And finally, Collider.com is reporting that Robert Downey, Jr. has bowed out of the adaptation of Scott Mitchell Rosenberg comic series Cowboys & Aliens only to be replaced by Daniel Craig. Actually, Craig is “in negotiations” to play the lead role of Zeke Johnson which means that nothing is certain.
