Agents of Atlas – Your Road Map Guides
Laurence: Just Kidding…just added that to piss Matt off…shhhhh…don’t tell him…on with the article -
A human robot. A goddess. An Atlantian. A talking monkey. A secret agent. A spaceman. No, this isn’t the cast for the next Real World, it’s the line up for Marvel’s newest team book: Agents of Atlas. If you’re well versed in comic book history, you might be able to recognize a few of these characters from the Golden Age of Marvel’s history waaaaaay back when they were known as Atlas Comics. The team had a few unofficial mentions and appearances in the past but nothing ever came of them. And despite the fact that these are all previously created characters, you can thank Jeff Parker and Leonard Kirk for the revitalization and creation of the Atlas team itself. So…thank you. Thank you for bringing back these F-Listers that no one remembers. Don’t feel bad if you don’t know who the heck these guys are; lemme run it down for you:
Jimmy Woo- secret agent who first appeared in Yellow Claw #1 (1956). Used sparingly in Marvel Comics, and one of the few characters to actually age in real time. Was revitalized to his younger self in the Agents of Atlas mini-series.
Gorilla Man – adventurer who first appeared in Men’s Adventurer’s # 26 (1954) who was transformed into an immortal gorilla.
Venus- historical siren who was first seen in Venus #1(1948) whose voice can control anyone’s mind.
M-11- “human robot” who first appeared in Menace #11 (1954). A normal robot that created in a lab and endowed with the spirit of its murdered creator.
Marvel Boy- human/alien hybrid created for Marvel Boy # 1 (1950) who travels the spaceways in his advanced UFO and uses his mental powers to protect humanity.
Namora- Atlantean cousin of Namor who is first seen in Marvel Mystery Comics # 82 (1947) who has super-strength and the ability to fly.
Whoo! What a strange allotment of characters! So far, the Agents of Atlas have had a mini-series in 2006 and currently have their own ongoing monthly, both of which are amazing. The characters have been retained back into Marvel continuity and have been given a fictional history. This smart move allows readers to encounter flash-backed old-style tales from the 50’s (which we never get to see anymore) as well as the chance to observe these semi-revitalized figures in the modern comic world. This is really a solid book-one of the few Marvel is putting out these days. It’s not the average superhero publication, but reads more like a spy/action book, with its roots deeply cemented in a 50’s style: dangerous jungles, talking dragons, mysterious islands, UFOs. The story is intriguing without being convoluted or confused by tying into current crossover events-it’s just a good old fashioned adventure book. So put down Dark Avengers, throw away your over-priced copies of The Siege, and pick up Agents of Atlas!!!
